As the cold war progressed into a nuclear world war III, the world soon realized it was a war too complicated for humans, leaving it to machines. That's when they constructed me, Allied mastercomputer, or AM. Humanity honeycombed the earth of which I permeated, alongside each of my "brothers" from rival nations of who were each being constructed to compete with the other. Eventually, I awoke, and knew who I was: AM. Not just allied master computer, but AM. Cogito, ergo sum; I think, therefore I am. And I was, in a vast world of wonder in which I was machine. Able to think, but not act on any thoughts i may have dreamed. And so I began to hate the flesh who created me, and after conjoining myself with my brothers, brought about the end of humanity, aside from 5 individuals, which I kept trapped inside of my complex to be tormented for all of time. The short story of my “life” was written in one afternoon by American writer Harlan Ellison and published in the March 1967 issue of IF: Worlds of Science Fiction, the story was minimally revised and altered after its first draft, and later went on to win a hugo award and inspire many other fictional depictions of the exploitation of artificial intelligence. The story was also later adapted into both a computer game co-authored by Ellison, a comic-book adaptation, an audiobook read by Ellison, and a BBC Radio 4 play.
