Once a confident philanthropist, he has been reduced to a paranoid and delusional man. He feels alienated from his companions due to the fact he is the youngest and "least affected" of the group, convinced they are conspiring against him and secretly despise him. Also the narrator of the story, his mental state renders him as an unreliable source to hear the story filtered through.
Once a callous and cruel scientist, he was a former member of the nazi party who served at the Auschwitz death camp experimenting on children to uncover the secret to eternal youth. From jewish descent himself, he had sold his family out in exchange for his life and liberty to continue his cruel experiments, resulting in the deaths of countless innocent lives. Also the oldest of his companions, his mind is failing him from old age, leaving his past somewhat of a mystery to even himself. His name is not even truly his own, as it has been bestowed onto him by I, AM.
Once a handsome and brilliant scientist, he has been de-evolved into a beastly, primate-like creature with a stunted mind, having the cognitive function on par with a toddler. He exhibits mostly primal-like urges and instincts, which often pose a hindrance to his companions, but arguably make his suffering more tolerable.
the only woman in the group, she was once a briliant engineer and hopeless romantic. she took pride in her chastity and innocense, however now her sense of love has been turned into an insachiable lust. also extremely empathetic and level-headed, she holds the group together with not only her acts of sexual service, but her compassion for her companions and ability to keep them together.
Once a passionate idealist and activist, he was a peace-marcher in the military. As a sort of sick irony, his choice to stay out of the war is what ultimately got him imprisoned in eternal torture instead of simply dead, a fate he openly years for. Now, he has been reduced to a shell of himself, having no motive or drive to take any action against his situation.
